TTWMN 099: Dog Whistles & Knee-Jerks (Part 2)

Day 2 of this series—after looking yesterday at how the world “triggers” us to react unwisely, today we focus on how certain Christian words are being maligned in their appropriation by unbiblical movements in the Church.  What does the Bible say about meditation, how we pray, spiritual disciplines, gifts of the Spirit and baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Discussed on the show

Prov. 29:20 “Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him”

Prov. 29:11“A fool utters all his mind, but a wise man keeps it in until afterwards”

James 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Prov. 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Proverbs 10:10-20 | Whoever winks the eye causes trouble, and a babbling fool will come to ruin. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. 12 Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses. 13 On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense. 14 The wise lay up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near… 17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray. 18 The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever utters slander is a fool. 19 When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. 21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but fools die for lack of sense.

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice. 16  The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult….18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing….23 A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims folly.

Proverbs 13:16 In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.

Proverbs 14:15 The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps. 16 One who is wise is cautiousand turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless. A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated.

Leviticus 19:15-18 |  “You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord. 17 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Psalm 15: O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?  Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue  and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend; in whose eyes a vile person is despised, but who honors those who fear the Lord; who swears to his own hurt and does not change;

Psalm 101:4 A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil.

Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart  I will not endure.

Matthew 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”

Psalm 63:5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,  and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.

Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

Matthew 3:11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
