TTWMN 172: Minds Without God

There’s no shortage of examples today of irrational, contradictory and nonsensical thinking—just turn on the news, read the feeds in facebook, or just go to your local college campus. And this sort of thinking frequently leads to violent, even “rabid” behavior, with a level of obsession and compulsion that in years not so distant in the past would have landed the perpetrator somewhere they could get “mental help”. Even Christian parents are stunned and at a loss to understand what happened to their child, who seemed so solid in the Lord, but who, after a semester or so at college, has become a sexually confused, socialistic anarchist. The reason is easy to discern, but difficult to accept: we are watching the world-takeover of minds without God.

Table Talk Notes

Observations on those in Revelation who keep cursing God and refusing to turn to Him despite what they see happening—suddenly realized our country is already half-way there, with much of the world (especially the West) even farther.

  • Iceland: recent poll finds 0% age 25 & under believe God created the universe (only 18% of total population does). Just 20 years ago, 90% of the population believed in God; today only 46% do. The fastest growing religion is Norse paganism, with a major temple under construction (the first to the Norse gods since Christianity was established over 1000 yrs ago)
  • Ireland: after Patrick brought the gospel here in the 5th century, Christianity became established throughout the island, preserving the Bible during the Dark Ages in Europe. After the Catholic Church’s involvement in the sex abuse scandals, the percentage of devout believers has fallen from 69% in 2011 to less than half, while it now ranks 7th for its number of declared atheists. While abortion is still against the law in all but the most extreme medical emergency (fetuses actually have strong protections and rights), in 2015 they were the first country to approve homosexual marriage by a national vote.
  • Performance Art: in honor of the International Women’s Day this year, a group joyfully performs a “mock abortion” on the Virgin Mary in front of a church.

In the Last Days…

Haters of God

Romans 1:28-32 | And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Lovers of Self

2 Tim 3:1-5 | But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.

Calling good “evil” and evil “good”

Isaiah 5:20-21 | Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!

Choosing to believe a lie instead of the truth

“Evolution is unproved and unprovable. We believe it because the only alternative is special creation, and that is unthinkable.”

-Sir Arthur Keith, British evolutionary anthropologist

Slaying one another

It started with “wilding” mostly 2011 and then the “Knockout Game” in 2013-14. Chicago recorded 762 murders in 2016, a 59.4% increase over 2015. But on a per capita basis, it is still only in 8th place behind St Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, Cleveland, Newark & Memphis. (Milwaukee was 11th). Threats against federal judges nationwide are rising: 1980 to 1993 averaged 238 per year; 2001 to 2007 averaged 808; in 2011 there were 1300 (US Marshalls Service). In a recent survey of family law & divorce attorneys in 25 states, over 40% reporting being threatened or assaulted.

Proverbs 29:10 | Bloodthirsty men hate one who is blameless and seek the life of the upright.

Rev 6:3-4 | When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

Matt 10:21-22, 34-36 | Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved… “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.

Sexually Immoral

Romans 1:24-27 | Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason, God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

2 Peter 2:12-15 | But these, like irrational animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray…

Refuse to give up their sin and rebellion against God despite the consequences

Rev 9:20-21 | The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Rev 11:9-10 | For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth.

Confused thinking

Romans 1:18-22 | For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools…

“Emotional Reasoning” cognitive

A cognitive process by which a person concludes that his/her emotional reaction proves something is true, regardless of the observed evidence. For example, even though a spouse has shown only devotion, a person using emotional reasoning might conclude, “I know my spouse is being unfaithful because I feel jealous.” Emotional reasoning, as a concept, was first introduced by psychologist Aaron Beck. It was included as a part of Beck’s broader research topic: cognitive distortions and depression. …Originally, emotional reasoning was attributed to automatic thinking. Beck believed that emotional reasoning stemmed from negative thoughts that were uncontrollable and happened without effort. This reasoning has been commonly accepted over the years. Most recently, a new explanation states that an “activating agent” or sensory trigger from the environment increases emotional arousal. With this increase in arousal, certain areas of the brain are inhibited. Combining the increase in emotional arousal with the inhibition of parts of the brain leads to emotional reasoning. (Wikipedia)

Prov 29:8, 11 | Scoffers set a city aflame, but the wise turn away wrath. If a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet… A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.

Another way of looking at it:

The Four Thought Processes

(from “The Death of Christian Thought: The Deception of Humanism and How to Protect Yourself” by Michael D. LeMay)

  • Evil Thought Process: Harm others even though I don’t benefit from their pain. (Satan) – maliciousness
  • Animal/Fleshly Thought Process: Harm others so I can gain. (Abortion)
    • Reactionary (knee-jerk)
    • Emotionally-driven and controlled
  • Human Thought Process: Give to others so I can also gain. (relationships)
    • Logic & reasoning
    • Human understanding
  • Godly Thought Process: Give to others with no expectation for self-gain. (Biblical marriage and fellowship) – only available to born-again believers
    • Holy Spirit-driven
    • Understanding God’s love for us, applying agape to others
    • Grace – Titus 2: 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

1 Corinthians 2:12-16 | Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
