TTWMN 217: Communicating In Newspeak Era

Remember the dystopian George Orwell novel, “1984”? The plot warned of the dangers of a totalitarian society that strips all freedoms from its citizens. The tools it used to control people were constant surveillance, the requirement of complete conformity of thought and even memory, and complete devotion to the unseen leader, “Big Brother”. A new language called “Newspeak” was created to facilitate such control, eliminating the very ability of its people to have independent thought, and continually re-writing history to match the current narrative—for example, in “DoubleThink” the term “blackwhite” was used to indicate the desired outcome of citizens to not only believe black was now white, but also to forget black was ever black. If you’ve tried to listen to national news, read the newspaper, or talk with anyone who disagrees with you politically or theologically recently, maybe your adult kids, your employees, neighbors, or students be they high school or college, you may feel like you’re talking a different language as their definitions and historical context are completely foreign to you…and are filled with so many contradictions they don’t even make sense. Welcome to communication in a newspeak era.

TTWMN 214: Good & Evil (Part 2)

Last week we started a discussion about what IS “Good”, and what is “Evil”… depending on who you ask, the answer can be quite different from person to person. In the last episode we discussed how Evil came into the world (from a biblical perspective just go back to the Fall in the Garden of Eden), and then explored what the World says is “Evil” compared to what God says is Evil, noting that while we may agree on the words used, like Injustice or Judgmentalism, how each of us defines them and our acts in accordance to those definitions will expose where our true allegience lies—with the World, or with God. A lot of our discussion focused on the fight over the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, with arguments centered around his alleged past and his suitability to serve in that capacity. Now that he is officially Justice Kavanaugh, any thought that those arguments and efforts to destroy him would cease are just wishful thinking. So we’re continuing the topics of “Good and Evil” today, by looking at what the World says is “Good”, versus what God says is good.

TTWMN 213: Good & Evil (Part 1)

We’ve talked many times on this show about the rapidly changing morals and values in our society. But what we have witnessed with the recent hearings regarding Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s suitability to be a Supreme Court Justice, takes the phrase “the politics of personal destruction” to a new level, as every aspect of his entire life was analyzed. Unverified accusations, refuted by all named witnesses, of acts supposedly committed in high school and college, were accepted by the opposition as “gospel”…interestingly, all while ignoring obvious AND PROVABLE assaults of women by vaunted members of that party. I don’t know about you, but I frequently feel I’ve awakened into a “bizarro” world, where up is down, right is wrong, and the laws of nature and physics no longer apply. But is that really true, that this is a new development? If we truly believe we Christians are not of this world, but only passing through until our real life in Christ is fully actualized, we could maybe see that it’s been this way all along, and the recent developments are only the promised increasing of evil in the world until Jesus returns… as it was in the days of Noah. So today we’re looking at what qualifies as “Good and Evil”, according to the World, and according to God.

TTWMN 208: Grace Under Fire (Part 2)

Last week, Mike and Nancy began a conversation about how we, as Christians, should react to adversity, whether by our own doing or by what others do to us, as innocent bystanders. So today we’re continuing that discussion, with part two of “Grace Under Fire”. We discussed the first three of the 8 principles: Knowing the Difference between Who You are and What You Do; God Cannot Lie and He knows the Future; and the 3rd for Christians, God Loves you as an Adopted Child through Jesus Christ, and He Cares About Your Happiness and Future.

TTWMN 207: Grace Under Fire (Part 1)

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Jesus promised us that our life as His disciple would be easy, one that never presented problems? Unfortunately, He makes no such promises. In fact we are taught that we will face problems in this life. But God has given us certain eternal principles in His Word that will help us maintain our joy no matter what circumstances life presents to us. And while these principles do not guarantee us we will never have troubles in this life, they do help keep our eyes focused on eternity, and give us the strength to live this life pointing others to the glory and promises of our Lord and Savior. Today’s show is titled “Grace Under Fire”, where Mike and Nancy explore eternal principles from God’s Word that help us navigate life’s challenges, allowing us to live a life full of joy and peace, regardless of our temporary circumstances.

TTWMN 192: In The Fire

Have you ever felt like you were in a pit you would never get out of? Whether it was your health, your finances, your marriage, legal problems…the list is endless of the things that can make us feel helpless and hopeless. Today we seem to be reminded daily of our lack of control over much of what affects us in this life—recent hurricanes, mass shootings and wildfires all threaten our “status quo”, eroding our comfort level and leaving an uneasy feeling in our guts. But for Christians, we should always remember that no matter what happens, no matter our circumstances, we have a constant companion who will never leave us during these trials, One who reminds us, to paraphrase Corrie Ten Boom, that there is no pit that HE is not deeper still. Today we’ll be studying a story out of Daniel, involving three Jewish boys who were snatched from their homes and taken to a foreign land filled with temptations and wickedness. But instead of conforming and taking the easy route there, they held tight to their faith and their God, even when facing death. Today we have teacher and author of the book, “Broken Yet Blessed” Kathi McCarty.

TTWMN 188: Protecting Innocence

There is no doubt anymore that the Enemy now has the full and even enthusiastic support of society to ensnare your kids in a lifetime of slavery to sin. And while the recent headlines of Teen Vogue or plots & characters of Disney Channel’s Doc McStuffins may have shocked us, we know the country has been going this direction for a long, long time. Public education, the media and the entertainment industry have been making a concerted effort to subvert the morality of our children for decades, an effort now aided by parents either too lazy or too afraid to step up and put boundaries on their kids…you know, actually “parent” them, teaching them right from wrong, giving them boundaries, and teaching them their choices have consequences for which they and they alone are responsible.

TTWMN 168: Modern Morality

We’ve talked often on this show about the increasing upheaval and downright craziness in the world today, as what was once universally considered right or good is now called “evil” and what was once looked at as “wrong” is now widely accepted as “good”. But a few weeks back a headline appeared that was so shocking in its “matter-of-fact” depiction of how far immorality has taken hold in our society, it’s had all of us wondering how it came to this, and is there any stopping the degradation of morals in our society?

TTWMN 158: Myths & Misery, or Truths & Freedom?

Halloween is right around the corner, and that puts many Christians into a tizzy with the arguments between those who say “it’s harmless fun to dress up and give candy to kids” and those who say “it’s evil and satanic—have nothing to do with it.” Here with us today to help us sort all this out is teacher and author of the book Broken Yet Blessed, Kathi McCarty.
