TTWMN 216: Cultivating Joy For Today

There are a lot of angry, frustrated, and downright depressed people out there these days—not much common courtesy, kindness or compassion on display. Maybe it’s just politics, or maybe people are weighed down with the increasing burden of surviving the world’s ever-growing preponderance of futility, lawlessness, and hopelessness (or maybe both). But wait a minute…for those who claim to be Christians, this world is NOT our real “home”. We’re supposed to remember that our real life is with Christ in heaven, where we are to keep our eyes focused, and we’re only passing thru here, hoping to bring people with us. Those saved by the blood of Christ should be different, look different, and live different in these times—but sadly I know too many who are in just as dark a place as the rest of the world. What is missing is the joy that should be so overwhelming it spills out of our every pore. Here today to teach us how to cultivate that joy in our lives is teacher and author of the book “Broken yet blessed”, Kathi McCarty.

TTWMN 204: Mercy Me

Have you ever been tempted to lash out at a driver who is driving too slow, too fast, recklessly, irrationally or inconsistently (one of my favorites: going slow, then speeding up when you try to pass—or the opposite, whizzing past you only to pull in front of you and slow way down)? Maybe, if you’re like me, you find yourself in mid rant…only to be reminded by the Lord of when you displayed similar behavior, or as Mike and I like to say when we do something clueless while driving, “Sorry, Tourists!” All of a sudden, all of your righteous indignation at the mistakes of others turns to sheepishly muttering, well maybe they aren’t familiar with the area and don’t know where they’re going or maybe they have an emergency, or maybe they are driving only as fast as they feel safe driving…and you are thankful they aren’t driving up to your speedy standards. Oh yes, we are awfully fond of the mercy we are shown, but mighty stingy with giving it in return, especially when we don’t feel it’s been earned. But if it’s earned, it isn’t mercy, is it?

TTWMN 184: True Freedom

A few weeks ago we celebrated our freedom in this country—but that got me thinking about exactly what IS “freedom”? Freedom from what? To do what? The answer could be different depending on who you ask, and for committed born-again followers of Christ, it will be something entirely different, even incomprehensible, for non-followers or even for nominal Christians. So today we’ll explore the whole idea of “freedom”, and what we need to be doing with that freedom.

TTWMN 179: A Life Of Dependency

Independence Day is just around the corner, when we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence that was the foundation of our country. Since then, every July 4th in this country we celebrate our “independence”, even embracing the spirit of independence as our national identity. While our founding fathers wanted independence from the tyranny of British rule, they knew something that we have forgotten, something that sadly seems so foreign to people today, we see it as counterintuitive. That truth that John Adams, John Witherspoon and George Washington firmly grasped is that there is no true freedom without Jesus Christ. And they knew it wasn’t enough just to intellectually acknowledge Him, but true freedom comes from complete dependence on Him. Here to explore this topic with us today is teacher and author of the book “Broken yet Blessed”, Kathi McCarty.
